What the numbers mean: the minimum is the smallest space current welfare guidance supports for an adult; the recommended size makes it much easier to create a proper warm-to-cool gradient. Always match the heating and lighting to the size you choose.

How it works

Each species has a minimum and a recommended enclosure size for a typical adult, based on veterinary and husbandry guidance. Because some animals grow larger than average, the tool also multiplies your animal’s adult total length by a factor for each dimension. If that result is bigger than the species minimum, the minimum is raised and rounded up to the next 6 inches, which is how most enclosures are sold.

None of the species in our list should share an enclosure, so if you choose group housing the tool warns you and still gives the size for one animal.

Finally, the tool compares the minimum against a list of common tank and enclosure sizes and names the smallest one that meets every dimension. The gallon figures use the US standard of 231 cubic inches per gallon.

Frequently asked questions

What size tank does my reptile need?

For one adult, current guidance is at least 48 × 24 × 24 inches (a “4×2×2”) for a bearded dragon, 36 × 18 × 18 inches for a leopard gecko and 48 × 24 × 24 inches for a ball python. Bigger is better as long as you can keep the right temperatures and enough hiding places.

How do I convert tank gallons to dimensions?

Multiply length × width × height in inches and divide by 231 to get US gallons. Going the other way is not exact, because many different shapes have the same volume. That is why the converter above lists common tanks near your gallon size instead of a single answer.

Why do reptile keepers use dimensions instead of gallons?

Gallons measure water volume, which suits fish. Reptiles use floor space and, for some species, height. A tall 75-gallon aquarium and a long 4×2×2 enclosure can hold similar volume but offer very different room to move and build a heat gradient, so dimensions are more useful.

Can a reptile enclosure be too big?

Rarely, if it is set up well. Problems come from large, empty spaces that are hard to heat and leave the animal feeling exposed. Fill a large enclosure with hides, plants and branches, and make sure the heat and UVB cover the areas your animal uses. Young snakes especially need clutter to feel secure.
