Ball python care at a glance

The ball python (Python regius) comes from the grasslands and open forests of West and Central Africa. It is calm, rarely bites and stays a manageable size, which makes it one of the most popular pet snakes. It is also long-lived: 20–30 years is common with good care.

Heat. Provide a warm basking area of about 88–92°F31–33°C, a cool side of 75–80°F24–27°C, and nights no lower than about 72–78°F22–26°C. Every heat source should run on a thermostat.

Humidity. Ball pythons need more humidity than most beginner reptiles: about 50–70%, rising to 60–65% during shed, with a humid hide. Low humidity is the most common cause of stuck shed.

Hides. Offer at least two snug hides, one on each side, so your snake can choose a temperature without feeling exposed. Insecure ball pythons are more likely to refuse food.

Common beginner mistakes

1. Panicking over a missed meal. Ball pythons often skip meals around sheds, in breeding season or in winter. Check your setup, then try again in a week.
2. Feeding live prey. Live rodents can badly injure a snake. Frozen-thawed prey is safer and easier to store.
3. Low humidity. Humidity below about 50% leads to stuck shed, especially around the eyes and tail tip.
4. A tank that is too open. Glass tanks with mesh tops lose heat and humidity and leave the snake feeling exposed. Cover part of the top and add clutter.
5. Power feeding. Feeding very often to speed growth can cause obesity and health problems. Follow the interval for your snake’s weight.
